Abstract

MARINHO, Ana Isabel Leitão et al. Dipstick urinalysis as a screening method for pre-eclampsia - an evidence-based review. Acta Obstet Ginecol Port [online]. 2022, vol.16, n.3, pp.291-294.  Epub Sep 30, 2022. ISSN 1646-5830.

Preeclampsia remains an important cause of maternal and perinatal mortality and morbidity around the world. Therefore, its early detection and management are vital. The Portuguese antenatal care program for low-risk pregnancies recommends blood pressure measurement and dipstick urinalysis at each antenatal visit. However, dipstick urinalysis has a poor sensitivity for the detection of significant proteinuria. Furthermore, proteinuria is not an essential element for diagnosing pre-eclampsia. Hence, with this review we aim to determine if dipstick urinalysis is a meaningful screening method for pre-eclampsia diagnosis in low-risk pregnancies.
