Abstract
FONSECA, Catarina Morais da; SILVA, Ana Filipa and FERREIRA, Maria do Céu. Two weights, one scale: psychopathology and psychopharmacology in pregnant women. Acta Obstet Ginecol Port [online]. 2022, vol.16, n.4, pp.342-353. Epub Dec 31, 2022. ISSN 1646-5830.
Depressive and anxiety disorders are the most frequent psychiatric pathologies in women, and pregnancy can trigger or decompensate these pathologies. This review focuses on the prescription of psychotropic drugs in the perinatal period, with an emphasis on the balance between maternal well-being and possible fetal complications. Recent studies are consensual regarding the need to properly diagnose and treat perinatal mental pathology due to the risk of potentially serious maternal-fetal consequences such as suicide and infanticide. Clinical management of psychiatric comorbidities during pregnancy remains a challenge, and the perinatal multidisciplinary approach is a priority to be implemented on a national level.
