The contraceptive counselling to people with severe intellectual disability is a challenge. The healthcare professional ought to be a facilitator of healthcare access and it should attend patient’s needs, always respecting the wishes and autonomy, but also the concerns of caretakers. This article intends to revise the contraceptive choices available, but also address its non-contraceptive benefits and legal issues as the rights of people with disabilities, crimes against sexual self-determination and other issues such as cervical and breast cancer early detection.
