Abstract

PALMA, Fátima et al. Estetrol/Drospirenone - an advance on CHC with ethinyl estradiol?. Acta Obstet Ginecol Port [online]. 2023, vol.17, n.4, pp.278-286.  Epub Dec 31, 2023. ISSN 1646-5830.

Combined hormonal contraception (CHC) is one of the most widely used contraceptive methods worldwide. Issues related to safety, particularly the thromboembolic risk, are under constant evaluation. Estetrol/drospirenone combination (E4/DRSP) is an effective combined oral contraceptive (COC) with a stable and regular bleeding profile, favourable effect on skin and good weight control. It has less impact on prothrombotic factors than combinations with ethinylestradiol (EE), with a potentially better safety profile, that needs to be confirmed in population-based studies.

Keywords : Contraception; Combined oral contraception; Combined hormonal contraception.
