Abstract

MAIO, Ana Maria Dantas de. The link between the journalist and the environment as expressed in a local newspaper: a discourse analysis involving the Brazilian Pantanal. OBS* [online]. 2014, vol.8, n.4, pp.55-70. ISSN 1646-5954.

A comparison of newspaper coverage of the Brazilian Pantanal by a local newspaper and a main media vehicle reveals similarities and differences that may contribute to the understanding of a local issue. The methodology of discourse analysis helps in the discovery of contexts and social relationships involving proximity journalism. Our conclusion from the news stories that were researched is that coverage by local media is more committed to indigenous issues and that the journalist's ties with the environment should not be ignored.

Keywords : Local media; Pantanal; communication; proximity journalism; discourse analysis.
