Abstract

ARAUJO, Emília  and  FERREIRA, Filipe. A look into the way foreign media cover Portuguese high skilled mobility. OBS* [online]. 2015, vol.9, n.2, pp.133-148. ISSN 1646-5954.

This article aims at problematizing how some international newspapers with global impact cover the phenomenon of Portuguese high skilled mobility in recent times. In this sense, the article is grounded in the literature about history, motivations and impacts of high skilled professionals as well as in studies concerning media coverage of migration phenomena. Assuming that high skilled mobility is a phenomenon of political and ideological relevance, the article presents the results provided by the analysis of a sample of international newspapers contents. The conclusions emphasise that media tend to describe the current mobility flows from Portugal, following a line or argumentation which is deep-rooted in colonial and imperialistic frames of representation through which mobility to countries such as Brazil and Angola, are presented as negative and depreciative.

Keywords : mobility; speech; skilled professionals.
