Abstract

BORGES, Lisa; DIAS, Emanuel  and  CASSIO, Isabel. Combined technique of splenic artery embolization and laparoscopic splenectomy: Case report. Angiol Cir Vasc [online]. 2013, vol.9, n.3, pp.93-96. ISSN 1646-706X.

The authors present a case report of a 53-year old woman, with myelodysplastic syndrome, manifested by symptomatic thrombocytopenia dependent of steroids in high doses. The patient was referenced to Vascular Surgery, by Hematology, for weighing splenic artery embolization. This procedure was performed with total embolization of the artery with coils and the patient was submitted to laparoscopic splenectomy on the next day. Both procedures were well succeeded, with no complications. The patient was discharged from the hospital on the fourth day after surgery, asymptomatic, clinically stable and with 208 000 platelets/µL. The combined method of splenic artery embolization and laparoscopic splenectomy is a safe and effective method, associated with a reduced complications incidence and a shorter hospital stay, when compared to laparoscopic splenectomy alone.

Keywords : Splenic artery embolization; Laparoscopic splenectomy; Thrombocytopenia refractory to medical therapy.
