Abstract

The present study evaluates the environmental conditions of the Capibaribe and Beberibe estuarine systems and Pina Basin, by mean of sedimentary organic matter characteristics associated with traditional sedimentary analysis. The employed parameters were the grain size, carbonate contents and the elemental and isotopic sedimentary organic matter analysis (C, N,δ¹³C, δ15N), correlating this proxies to local environmental conditions in 50 surface sediment samples. Correlation analysis,cluster and principal components were made based on the results. The analysis revealed a predominance of the silty sediments, poorly selected and with high organic contents (1.2 to 15.2%) because it is a highly eutrophic environment. The carbonate contents do not present a direct relationship only with a specific grain size fraction (sand), but also with an available marine source. The stable isotopic ratios ranged from -26.20 to -21.62 ‰PDB (δ¹³C) and -0.96 to 6.05 ‰Ar (δ15 N). The current data and the comparison with previous work indicate a low-energy depositional environment, submitted to the strong influence of terrigenous sources, anthropogenic, in particular with marine influence on sedimentation in specific portions of the system. The area acts as a natural trap of sediments and is characterized as a confined estuarine environment, subjected to a strong silting process, densely urbanized with perennial supply of fine silty siliciclastic and clayey sediments, with high organic contents. This combination of factors produces an environment of coastal sedimentation with high environmental vulnerability, indicated by the classification as hypertrophic. This is a direct result of the anthropic multiple uses of the estuarine system, mainly associated to domestic and industrial sewage in natura discharges to the area, among other sources of pollution.
