Abstract

MARCOS-ROBLES, José-Luis et al. Use of close range photogrammetry and RPAs for determining biomass in agricultural areas. RISTI [online]. 2016, n.19, pp.118-130. ISSN 1646-9895.  https://doi.org/10.17013/risti.19.118-130.

To estimate the carbon uptaken by the aerial biomass of a crop, destructive methods based on random sampling of plants are often used. These methods usually require a great effort of time, work and economic costs, besides the error generated in the interpolation process. On the other hand, close range photogrammetric methods that take advantage of sensors mounted on remotely piloted aircraft (RPAs or drone) can be used easily and quickly to obtain the necessary information in order to estimate the aerial biomass of a crop and therefore the assimilated carbon. In this work a methodology based on these photogrammetry techniques by using RPAs with optical off-the-shelf cameras onboard is proposed. This methodology allows a quick data acquisition and processing, relative low costs and reliable and accurate results.
