Mental health in the XXI century will depend on socio-political policies that given the economic climate that exists worldwide will difficult predictions. However, regardless what can happen, it is necessary once and for all to include families in the therapy project developed with the mentally ill. To be successful with family involvement in therapy projects it is necessary to adopt communication processes at an interpersonal level relationship nurses / families of the mentally. The aim of this study with nurses working in mental health and psychiatric units is: - Identify how nurses intervene with families so that they feel supported when they need help to cope with the disease situation in the family. - Information about the length of time used to listen to the families. A sample of seven nurses was studied by semi-structured interviews. Data processing was subjected to content analysis. Our study demonstrates that: - The time used by nurses to communicate with family is essentially aimed at providing information on the procedures to be with the patient after discharge. - They understand the family as a key element for the patient sense of balance, not appreciating the family sense of balance. - The attention focus is the mentally ill patient. Conclusions: there is little communication between nurses and family members of mentally ill patients and when dialogue occurs it is to obtain data of patients or to refer them to other health professionals. It is important to motivate nurses to develop communication processes with these families and real instances of therapeutic help. With these procedures we believe that health gains will be obtain, observable with the decrease of anxiety within the family members, better relationship between patients and their family members, and therefore, fewer hospital admissions.
