Abstract

BRANDAO, Manuel  and  SILVA, Celso. Impacto da Psicoterapia de Grupo em Doentes Alcoólicos Relativamente à Auto-Estima e Controlo do Craving. Revista Portuguesa de Enfermagem de Saúde Mental [online]. 2012, n.8, pp.45-51. ISSN 1647-2160.

The Unit of Treatment and Rehabilitation of Alcoholics (UTRA) in Portalegre was the organizational resource proposed for the project presented. This unit works on the premises of Acute Psychiatry Service of the Department of Mental Health and Psychiatry, Hospital Dr. José Maria Grande Portalegre. This unit is intended for individuals from 18 years of both genders, living in the Portalegre district. The scientific study presented here aims to study the impact of psychotherapeutic approach in relation to two dimensions that we consider essential in the treatment and recovery of alcoholism, namely, self-esteem and craving. We chose to conduct an exploratory, descriptive, analytical and longitudinal study, using a quantitative approach. In this study we have used a convenience sample. The Rosenberg Self-Esteem scale was used to assess the level of self-esteem of the person. It was also used the Penn Alcohol Craving Scale (PACS), in order to evaluate the control of craving by the study subjects. Both scales are self-administered questionnaires and were distributed to all at the same time before the start of a session at the end of 3rd and 6th session. So, in a paired relationship between self-esteem and craving, it was possible to find statistically significant differences in the different moments of research. This gives us the clear existence of statistically significant differences between self-esteem and craving in research carried out three times, which coupled with changes in mean values indicates that the psychotherapeutic intervention made a decisive contribution to these same statistical changes found, clearly showing health gains for individuals belonging to the sample, in relation to craving control, and increased self-esteem that are fundamental to the maintenance of alcohol abstinence.
