Abstract

COSTA, Ana Rita Dias  and  SEQUEIRA, Carlos. Efetividade de um Programa de Estimulação Cognitiva em Idosos com Défice Cognitivo Ligeiro. Revista Portuguesa de Enfermagem de Saúde Mental [online]. 2013, n.9, pp.14-20. ISSN 1647-2160.

In recent years some researchers focused on the value of interventions to stimulate cognition, based on the assumption that the mild cognitive impairment (MCI) presents a major risk factor for developing dementia. However, there is still no consensus on effective techniques and interventions recommended that show greater effectiveness, and also their systematization. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of a program of cognitive stimulation in the elderly with mild cognitive impairment. Method: A quasi-experimental, quantified, design with pre and post-test and control group. The study involved elderly with MCI: 17 included in the experimental group, and 16 included in the control group. The experimental group participated in a program of cognitive stimulation. Results: The main results showed that, after evaluation of pre and post-test in the experimental group, and between the post-test both groups, an improvement in orientation, short-term memory, language and visual-space guidance. There were no substantial changes in activities of instrumental and daily living. Great improvement was verified in the experimental group regarding the use of memory strategies, mainly the external ones, as well an improvement in face- name association. Conclusions: The implementation of a cognitive stimulation program is essential in people with mild cognitive impairment in order to enhance cognition, improve the autonomy and minimize the impact of deficits.
