BACKGROUND: the high prevalence of mental illness in older people is associated with a set of clinical manifestations, which are relevant focus to consider the nursing practice. This condition determines specific problems and needs that require a response tailored to the characteristics of the population and their health priorities. This article presents the results of the first phase of the development of a CIPE catalog, focusing on the needs of the elderly in psychiatric and mental health nursing. Objectives: to identify and select the mental health nursing focus most common in older people with mental illness, in order to create an information base for the development of a CIPE catalog. METHODOLOGY: based on the results of previous work, we conducted a Delphi study using a panel of nurses, belonging to a mental health nursing scientific society. RESULTS: the nursing focus where consensus was reached were: cognition (100%); memory and orientation (98%); loneliness and concentration (96%); depression, anxiety, attention and thinking (94%); insomnia, sadness and self control (90%); confusion and helplessness (88%); fatigue (86%); hopelessness (84%); self esteem (82%); desolation, perception, communication and will to live (80%); coping (78 %); will power and stress (70%). CONCLUSIONS: the study allowed the selection of a relevant set of focuses for nursing practice related to mental health, composing an important contribution to the development of a CIPE catalog, aiming to support the clinical practice in the provision of nursing care to older people in different contexts.
