Abstract

THEORETHICAL FRAMEWORK: The approach to mental health in the context of ageing is complex because its maintenance results of socio-economic factors, qualifications, gender, age and physical health. It is essential to recognize its importance to elderly’s quality of life and integrate that aspect in geriatric evaluation. OBJECTIVE: To assess the functional status in mental health of individuals aged 75 years old or more of Coimbra. METHODOLOGY: Quantitative and descriptive study. The randomized sample was stratified by gender, age and place of residence and it is composed by 1153 individuals. The questionnaire used wasQuestionário de Avaliação Funcional Multidimensional para Idosos. RESULTS:  Men of the age group 75-84 have better results in the Short Portable Mental Status Questionnaire and in the Short Psychiatric Evaluation Schedule. Women and individuals aged ≥ 85 years old reported worse self-assessment and greater perception of deterioration in their mental state. CONCLUSION: In ​​mental health, it is emphasized that women and older individuals (≥ 85 years) have, tendentiously, worse ratings. Given the results described the need of a multidimensional assessment of the elderly is evident. Mental health area and the integration of mental health services within primary health care are to be encompassed too.
