PRATA, Ana Paula; NEVES, Ana João; SANTOS, Célia  e  SANTOS, Margarida Reis. Translation, adaptation and validation of the Childbirth Self-Efficacy Inventory (CBSEI) for the language and Portuguese culture. Revista Portuguesa de Enfermagem de Saúde Mental [online]. 2016, n.15, pp.9-16. ISSN 1647-2160.  https://doi.org/10.19131/rpesm.0126.

Women's self-efficacy to cope with childbirth influences their perception of labour and delivery. Early identification of pregnant women with low self-efficacy to cope with labour can help maternal health nurses in the development of interventions that provide a more effective response to the support that these women might demand. The Childbirth Self-Efficacy Inventory (CBSEI) measures the confidence of women in their ability to cope with labour and can be a useful tool for the clinical practice, which justifies the aim of this study: translate, culturally adapt and validate this instrument to the Portuguese population. The convenience sample consisted of 525 pregnant women with 28 or more weeks of pregnancy. Regarding the scale’s level of reliability, Cronbach's alpha values higher than 0.89 substantiate the conclusion that CBSEI is reliable for this population. The main component analysis justified each of the subscales having two dimensions, namely self-control/relaxation and distraction. The substantial correlation between the subscales in both periods of labour and Cronbach's alpha values higher than 0.90 permitted also to consider the proposal moved forward by several authors of reducing the questionnaire subscales from four to two.
