BACKGROUND: Create, implement and evaluate the effectiveness of training programs for family caregivers of people with dementia living at home should be a goal for Mental Health Nursing. AIM: To identify the defining characteristics of a training program for family caregivers of people with dementia living at home. METHODS: Focus Group. RESULTS: As a typology for these programs it proposes to: 6/8 weeks, 6/8 individual sessions, lasting 60 minutes each. Key topics to be addressed: disease and its stages, caregiver needs, among others. Methodological aproaches go through the discussion of issues and the problem-solving techniques. The evaluation should take place before and after the program, through instruments that measure sociodemographic characteristics, overload, satisfaction, among others. CONCLUSION: This study identified the main characteristics to be included in the training programs for family caregivers of people with dementia living at home, opening the door for the development of interventions in this area and for future research projects.
