Abstract

DIAS, Catarina; VALENTIM, Olga; SEABRA, Paulo  and  NOGUEIRA, Maria José.  Hope promoting interventions in psychiatric / mental health nursing : a scoping review. Revista Portuguesa de Enfermagem de Saúde Mental [online]. 2020, n.spe7, pp.97-102. ISSN 1647-2160.  https://doi.org/10.19131/rpesm.0253.

BACKGROUND: Hope plays a central role in people's lives and influences various dimensions of it, as hope is developed in the relationship with others. The Psychiatric and Mental Health Specialist Nursing holds the relational knowledge that allows him(her) to inspire/maintain hope in a multiplicity of caring settings. It is important to systematize the knowledge about therapeutic interventions in the promotion of hope (IPE) so that it can be operationalized in clinical practice. AIM:To identify specialized mental health nursing interventions regarding hope promotion. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted, as recommended by Joanna Briggs Institute. The search was conducted in EBSCO, PubMed and Academic Google platforms, between April and September 2018, with the descriptors hope AND mental health AND nurse OR nursing. RESULTS: Five studies were identified (three articles, one internship report, one doctoral dissertation), in diverse contexts (hospital, community, forensic), presenting various approaches to implement IPE (individual or group), which can be more or less structured. CONCLUSIONS: Studies have two common aspects: the therapeutic relationship and the need for IPE nurses to have high levels of hope. The IPE approaches depend on the context and on the theoretical orientation of the practitioner as well. It is vital to respect the patients' agenda. This scoping review confirms the need to produce more studies in different settings and populations, adjusting IPE to the multiple contexts of caring.
