Resumen

JUNIOR, Fernando da Silva et al. Suicidal ideation, alcohol consumption and tobacco by women. Revista Portuguesa de Enfermagem de Saúde Mental [online]. 2021, n.25, pp.66-78.  Epub 30-Jun-2021. ISSN 1647-2160.  https://doi.org/10.19131/rpesm.0298.

Background:

The use of alcoholic beverages and tobacco has historically had a negative impact on people's lives. Currently, an emerging concern is its relationship to suicidal behavior.

Aim:

To analyze the relationship between suicidal ideation, consumption of alcoholic beverages and tobacco by women treated at a primary health care unit, in five municipalities in Piauí, Brazil.

Methods:

An analytical, cross-sectional, quantitative analysis study was conducted with 369 women from Piauí-Brazil. For data collection we used the form, Alcohol Use Desorders Identification Test, Non-Student Drugs Use Questionnaire and Self-Reporting Questionnaire. Descriptive and inferential statistics were performed.

Results:

The data indicate an association between suicidal ideation with the use of alcoholic beverages (p-value<0.001) and with smoking (p-value<0.001). Women identified as possible alcohol and tobacco dependents are respectively 3.9 (CI = 1.957-8.153) and 3.3 (CI = 1.456-6.720) times more likely to have suicidal ideation.

Conclusions:

The study identified a relationship between suicidal ideation, alcohol consumption and tobacco in the female universe. Furthermore, the more intense the pattern of alcohol consumption, the greater the chances of women having ideas about taking their own lives.

Palabras clave : Suicidal ideation; Alcoholism; Tobacco use disorder; Mental health.
