Resumen

Background:

The university is the institution that trains professionals from different areas and the achievement of a place in Higher Education brings changes in various aspects of daily life and the need for adaptations, which can generate stress, feelings of worry, anguish and increased levels of anxiety.

Objective:

to assess the anxiety of nursing and medical students at a public university.

Methodology:

quantitative, descriptive and cross-sectional study, carried out with 272 nursing and medical students. Data collection was performed using Google forms, using a sociodemographic questionnaire and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (anxiety subscale). Analyzes were performed using absolute and relative frequency.

Results:

it was found that there was a predominance of females (72.1%), aged up to 22 years (48.9%), single marital status (93.4%), non-smokers (94.1 %) and originating from other municipalities (92.6%). In addition, 92.3% are satisfied with the course, 97.1% identify with the course, 90.4% kept financially with the help from family members, 66.5% performed extracurricular activities and 71.0% had experienced some remarkable event in their lives in the last year. Among all participants, 58.1% were classified as having anxiety, with 58.4% for nursing course participants and 57.9% for medicine.

Conclusion:

higher education institutions should pay attention to aspects that involve the anxiety of academics, implementing support actions that help and promote the improvement of the psychic quality of this population.
