Abstract

SEID, Gonzalo. Shadows of bankruptcy. Trajectories of social decline in families of small merchants in Buenos Aires. SOCIOLOGIA ON LINE [online]. 2021, n.25, pp.35-61.  Epub Feb 08, 2022. ISSN 1647-3337.  https://doi.org/10.30553/sociologiaonline.2021.25.2.

This article presents a qualitative research on social mobility in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Following the theoretical perspectives of Pierre Bourdieu and Daniel Bertaux on social class trajectories, we carried out life stories and family trees of economic and family itineraries. More specifically, we analyzed three trajectories of social decline of individuals from families of small merchants. Each of these trajectories shows a variant of family economic decapitalization within the middle sectors. These kind of processes are sociologically relevant both for the particularities of Argentine economic history and for not having been adequately explored in local sociology of stratification and social mobility.

Keywords : social class; social decline; decapitalization; social mobility..
