The current paper analyses the genesis and consolidation of sociology of culture in Portugal as a sociological specialty, in a sociohistorical perspective. Considering the theoretical and methodological contributions of sociology of science, the paper analyses the origins and the path of Portuguese sociology of culture, the institutional foundations that supported its development, as well as the external and internal factors that favored that same development. It also aims to identify the main topics of the research agenda, its relative significance in terms of publication volume, reference works, and the institutional and scientific contexts of that agenda.
