CARVALHO DA SILVA, Vanessa  e  AVILA, Patrícia. AT THE EDUCATION SOCIETY’S MARGINS: SOCIAL PROFILES, PRACTICES, AND ATTITUDES TOWARDS LIFELONG LEARNING IN PORTUGAL FROM ADULTS WHO DIDN’T PARTICIPATE IN TRAINING AND EDUCATION ACTIVITIES. SOCIOLOGIA ON LINE [online]. 2022, n.28, pp.35-68.  Epub 27-Jul-2022. ISSN 1647-3337.  https://doi.org/10.30553/sociologiaonline.2022.28.2.

In contemporary societies, marked by the centrality of knowledge, information, and education, part of the adult population still has very low educational levels hence remaining outside the dynamics of the so-called Lifelong Learning (LLL). This is a segment of the population that, from the point of view of sociological analysis and the incidence of public policies, has been left behind and know little about. Therefore, we intend to contribute to the knowledge and visibility of the phenomenon of poorly educated individuals who, despite the initiatives implemented in the field of adult education and training and LLL, remained on the margins of the educational society. In the absence of extensive studies specifically focused on this segment of the population, we resort on the 2016 edition of the Adult Education Survey to try mapping the phenomenon in Portugal. With a transversal presence in Portuguese society, it is a group of significant size, whose diversity was captured through the identification of different profiles. The same data also allowed portraying the practices and attitudes towards LLL among the population with low educational attainment in Portugal.
