Starting from a brief analytical synthesis on the influence of Sociology in Portugal, within the academic, student, labor and political spheres, this text discusses the gradual process of implementation of Sociology as a disciplinary and teaching area in undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Also, its process of institutionalization in Polytechnic Institutes and above all Universities was considered successful. Finally, it is argued, that Sociology has been paradoxically relegated to an insignificant role in basic and secondary education when being a transversal discipline around topics such as society, culture and politics, should constitute a training imperative. science and citizenship of young people.
