Abstract

HENRIQUES, Carolina Neto. TRANSDISCIPLINARITY AND POSTNORMAL SCIENCE: THE EMERGENCE OF A POST-KUHNIAN PARADIGM?. SOCIOLOGIA ON LINE [online]. 2022, n.28, pp.97-117.  Epub July 27, 2022. ISSN 1647-3337.  https://doi.org/10.30553/sociologiaonline.2022.28.4.

Particularly present within the conceptual universe concerning the debates about Transdisciplinarity, Post-Normal Science emerges in the 1990’s as a thesis prioritizing the Science-Technology-Society triad to overcome the limitations of “normal” science, as defined by Thomas Kuhn. This paper argues that this thesis is insufficient by refusing to acknowledge the sociological and historical conditions under which the limitations of “normal” science are denounced; consequently, this thesis is confronted with three readings - one, resorting to the work of T. Kuhn; a second one, resorting to the thesis of the “Mode 2” knowledge production, as proposed by Michael Gibbons, et al.; and a third one, resorting to the work of Ben Martin. Through a critical literature review, this paper concludes that, in the 21st century, proposals aiming to transform the University’s mission face new challenges possibly questioning the future of the Research-University itself.

Keywords : transdisciplinarity; kuhnian normal science; postnormal science; mode 2..
