In the last 20 years, dark tourism - a tourism dynamic based on the act of visiting places marked, namely, by suffering - is one of the subjects explored by the sociology of tourism. The objective of this article is to advance with a contribution to the understanding of this practice in Portugal, based on exploratory research on the preservation of the Peniche Fortress, which housed a political prison during the Portuguese dictatorship. This analysis is conducted by the articulation between the theoretical framework, which explores how dark tourism has been approached, with the fieldwork developed in Peniche Fortress, through an interview with the director of the space and documentary analysis. As a result, a vision of what this place under construction is intended to be is presented, as well as the interpretation strategy that has been prepared, which is essential for the moment of encounter between visitors and the past.
