Abstract

LEAO, Tânia. ORGANIZATION, WORK, AND VOLUNTEERING AT FILM FESTIVALS: ANALYSIS OF TWO PORTUGUESE CASES. SOCIOLOGIA ON LINE [online]. 2023, n.31, pp.76-95.  Epub July 27, 2023. ISSN 1647-3337.  https://doi.org/10.30553/sociologiaonline.2023.31.5.

This article proposes a reflection on the organisational, work and volunteering components in film festivals, analytical dimensions remaining less covered by scientific research. It presents a sociological research on the audiences of Curtas Vila do Conde and IndieLisboa, first, carried out between 2009 and 2012, using a mixed methodology (surveys, interviews, participant observation, ethnographic and image records), second, between 2014 and mid-2020 using an ethnographic research. The article focuses on the structure and organisation of festivals, the employment situation, the precariousness of labour conditions and the relevance of volunteering. The results suggest that festivals tend to be “volatile” structures organised around precarious labour conditions and volunteering. The main conclusion is that, although film festivals operate on the basis of an institutional model favouring non-profit-making associations, there is a trend finding similarities between the way in which work is organised and the models in force in the cultural and creative industries.

Keywords : film festivals; precarious work; volunteering; non-profit organisations..
