Abstract

CLEMENTE, Mara. THE STRUGGLE AGAINST TRAFFICKING AND EACH OTHER: WOMEN’S AND FEMINIST ORGANIZATIONS IN PORTUGUESE COUNTER-TRAFFICKING. SOCIOLOGIA ON LINE [online]. 2023, n.31, pp.96-115.  Epub July 27, 2023. ISSN 1647-3337.  https://doi.org/10.30553/sociologiaonline.2023.31.6.

Since the end of the 19th century, international activists and feminist organizations have played a leading role in counter-trafficking. The article focuses on Portuguese women’s and feminist organizations involved in more recent institutional counter-trafficking efforts. It analyzes the contribution these organizations have made to the construction of the idea(s) of trafficking and the development of current counter-trafficking policies and practices. Documents and interviews with different organizations in the counter-trafficking field enable us to identify some of the main elements that decisively influence these organizations in Portugal, especially the deep divisions around prostitution and the competition for financial resources.

Keywords : women’s and feminist organizations; feminism; human trafficking; prostitution..
