Abstract

PONCES, Rita  and  DIOGO, Ana Matias. Gender Inequalities in the Azorean Labor Market and the Young People’s Perceptions. SOCIOLOGIA ON LINE [online]. 2023, n.32, pp.11-33.  Epub Dec 07, 2023. ISSN 1647-3337.  https://doi.org/10.30553/sociologiaonline.2023.32.1.

This article seeks the characterization of the gender inequalities present in the Azorean labour market and deepening the specific case of the youth perspectives. Therefore, data from the Quadros de Pessoal from 2019, related to the population employed in the private sector, were analyzed followed by an in-depth analysis based on 24 interviews with young adults. The results indicate the persistence of gender inequalities in the Azorean labour market, although there is a certain invisibility of these phenomena in the perception of young people, who tend to align their discourse with the ideal of gender equality. Secondly, the analysis of work-family balance by young couples reveals the persistence of gender asymmetries, especially when it comes to childcare. These come from naturalized gender stereotypes and make their impact on women’s professional careers invisible.
