In this essay, I examine the differences between multiculturalism and interculturalism assuming that not only they represent different models, but also their institutionalization occurs at different scales. First, I offer a system of premises to identify the scope of a multicultural practice or policy. Second, I highlight those authors who understand interculturalism as a mere rhetorical variation of earlier multiculturalism. Third, I try to show how we can differentiate the two models starting from their institutional logics. Finally, and with the brevity of an essay, I point out some weaknesses of multiculturalism that make the critique rehearsed by the defenders of interculturalism more pertinent, as well as their main proposals. I conclude by emphasizing some premises of interculturalism where substantive differences with multiculturalism are supported.
