Abstract

ROMANA, Ana João. Pioneer: Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso on the international context of the first the artist’s books. Estúdio [online]. 2012, vol.3, n.6, pp.72-78. ISSN 1647-6158.

The pioneering art books of William Blake are scrutinized, framing this perspective with the a reference to the medieval hand painted book. Afterwards, we will consider the hand made book ‘A Lenda de S. Julião Hospitaleiro’ (‘The legend of St. Julian the Hospitaller’) of Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso, 1912, also sharing medieval influences, although on the modernist context and on the artists’ book perspective.

Keywords : medieval book; livre d’artiste; Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso; the legend of St Julian Hospitaller; modernism.
