Abstract

REIS, Vítor Manuel Guerra dos. Smoke, Steam and Lava: the Uncertain Landscapes of Francisco Afonso Chaves (1857-1926). Estúdio [online]. 2013, vol.4, n.8, pp.42-51. ISSN 1647-6158.

Between the photographic works of the Portuguese naturalist Francisco Afonso Chaves (1857-1926) there are stereoscopic photographs of volcanic structures. These immersive images must be inscribed in a peculiar kind of landscape: the hostile landscape. In comparison to the normal representations they produce an expansion of the visual experience and, in comparison with reality, a reduction of the sensorial experience. These are strange, sublime, uncanny and uncertain landscapes.

Keywords : photography; stereoscopy; volcanic; sublime; uncertain.
