Abstract

SALTEIRO, Ilídio. D. João Marcos: Bishop and painter of altarpieces today. Estúdio [online]. 2016, vol.7, n.14, pp.16-23. ISSN 1647-6158.

Dom João Marcos (b. 1944), coadjutor Bishop of the Diocese of Beja, with artistic training in Fine Arts Painting, has been making many notable altarpieces. Above all, his way of operating privileges the sublime moments of open mind in harmony with the spiritual dimension of man and life. As part of a Western culture eminently Christian, the matrix of his painting is integrated in the aesthetic of a Neocatechumenal Way, a sizeable branch of the Vatican Council II.

Keywords : João Marcos; bishop painter; altarpiece; contemporary art; religion; Christianism.
