Abstract

GONCALVES, Sandra Maria Lúcia Pereira. Black Skin: the poetics of light. Estúdio [online]. 2016, vol.7, n.16, pp.153-160. ISSN 1647-6158.

The proposed article aims to reflect on the seminal work of photographer artist Maureen Bisilliat, Black Skin. The photographic Black Skin essay was conducted in the 1960s. The series consists of 23 black and white images of three black models: a woman, a man and a child, and votive images. Through these images the artist asserts her political and social vision of Brazilian society combined with a poetic light with surrealist features. Concepts such as Photography Minor (Gonçalves, 2009) and the Crystal Image (Deleuze, 2007; Fatorelli 2003) will be present.

Keywords : Maureen Bisilliat; Black skin; Photography expression.
