Abstract

WOLFF, Daniel. The gaucho milonga at the genesis of the Quintet for guitar and string quartet, by Fernando Mattos. Estúdio [online]. 2018, vol.9, n.24, pp.42-53. ISSN 1647-6158.

The present work analyses the use of the gaucho milonga as a building element of the Quintet for guitar and string quartet (2008), by Brazilian composer Fernando Mattos. After examining the background of the milonga, we analyze how it served as a basis for the creation of atwelve-tone series, from which matrixes were generated through diverse serial manipulations. The use of other milonga elements is also investigated, as well as further influences that contributed to the composition process.

Keywords : Fernando Mattos; milonga; guitar; quintet.
