Abstract

PEREIRA, Teresa Isabel Matos. Time, Memory and palimpsest in Sonia Gomes's work. Estúdio [online]. 2019, vol.10, n.26, pp.93-103. ISSN 1647-6158.

The text focuses on the creative and artistic process of the Brazilian artist Sônia Gomes whose work is born from the rescue of textiles and other "found" materials such as paper, cardboard, trunks, roots, wire, etc. Through the artist's gesture these "waste" materials know a new existence as objects of art, embedded with memory. Tying or sewing garments, fabrics, embroidery and other materials, the artist summons its existential dimension; its cycles of use, particular links with its owner, make these pieces a palimpsest that interweaves successive layers of time-meaning.

Keywords : Textile Art; Appropriation; Palimpsest; Time.
