Abstract

CORUJO, Cecília. Maia Horta's SELF-HELP: self-portrait as a device of empowerment and self-definition. Estúdio [online]. 2019, vol.10, n.28, pp.142-151.  Epub Dec 31, 2019. ISSN 1647-6158.

Choosing Maia Horta's series of self-portraits "SELF-HELP" (2014-2016) as the object of study, one observes how these paintings materialize, in their variety, a subversion of the typical, one-dimensional representation of the female subject in the social media virtual networks. It is analyzed, through a feminist thought, how this set of images contradict the History of self-portraiture and deconstruct the romantic myth of the artist-genius. It is argued that self- representation can be an affirmation of the multiplicities and divergences of the Self.

Keywords : Self-portrait; selfie; painting; history of art; feminism referencing.
