Abstract

VALESINI, María Silvina. Adding absences in the air: on the performative condition in the art installations of Doris Salcedo and Teresa Margolles. Estúdio [online]. 2020, vol.11, n.31, pp.145-155.  Epub Sep 30, 2020. ISSN 1647-6158.

In this work we will address two traversable artworks by artists Doris Salcedo and Teresa Margolles which, through resources that put into action and into image the tensions between presence and absence, are proposed as symbolic reparation strategies. Operating through what we conceive as a performative turn of art, each of them conforms in the spectator’s experiential space a propitious scenario to comply with unresolved duels and funeral rituals postponed in Latin America, linked to forced missings and violent deaths, to enable memory become action.

Keywords : Presence; Absence; Installation art; Performative turn; Traversable artwork.
