Abstract

PIRES, Susana. Habitus for a possible body: walking with Martha Araújo's wearable objects. Estúdio [online]. 2021, vol.12, n.34, pp.132-140.  Epub June 30, 2021. ISSN 1647-6158.

Martha Araújo was born in Maceó, Brazil, in 1943. During the 1980s Araújo developed a set of wearable objects, designed to promote experiences for the body. In “Habit/Inhabitant” (1982-1985), the public is invited to participate wearing the art work. By the use of velcro tape, this performance object is a proposal to choose to free or to join the habit (clothing) from the gallery's physical limits or form the body of other participants. This paper proposes to revisit Araújo's poetic propositions as rehearsal landscapes for one near future.

Keywords : habit; textile; intercorporality; gestures; isolation.
