Abstract

COELHO, Maria José Marino Marcela. The Mythological Painting of Carlos Reis: Art, History and Nationalism between the Monarchy and the 1st Republic. Estúdio [online]. 2021, vol.12, n.34, pp.151-165.  Epub June 30, 2021. ISSN 1647-6158.

Carlos Reis was one of the most prestigious Portuguese naturalist painters of the early 20th century. He followed the stylistics that Silva Porto promoted in the 1880s, gathering around him an artistic elite formed by the disciples of the Academy of Fine Arts. He founded several groups whose purpose was to paint the Portuguese landscape and rural life in an open air context in the aesthetic line of Barbizon. This article highlights the mythological and decorative paintings that he produced, on request, with the same scenographic character that he used in the landscape treatment.

Keywords : Carlos Reis; History Painting; Mythological Painting; Art; Nationalism.
