Abstract

CARDOSO, Rodrigo. Cidades principais e secundárias na Europa: uma caracterização dos contrastes à escala da região urbana. GOT [online]. 2015, n.7, pp.85-109. ISSN 2182-1267.  https://doi.org/10.17127/got/2015.7.004.

This paper compares three sets of primate and second-tier cities in Europe to verify whether they follow similar patterns of socio-economic and structural contrasts at the urban region scale. This is important because some literature suggests fundamental differences between both types of urban region which should be made visible. A geodemographic analysis, based on existing syntheses or bespoke indicators, does show similar contrasts between primate and second-tier cities across Europe, notably regarding the incidence and distribution of socio-economic groups. Exploring these differences contributes both to a typology of these cities and to the study of forms of functional and institutional integration at the urban region scale.

Keywords : second-tier city; city-region; metropolisation; geodemography.
