Abstract

COELHO, Rodrigo. The public space in the construction of recent portuguese city: three decades in perspective. GOT [online]. 2016, n.9, pp.91-112. ISSN 2182-1267.  https://doi.org/10.17127/got/2016.9.005.

Due to the fragmented and discontinuous spread of urbanization, Portuguese cities have seen in the last three decades their urban condition dramatically changed, leading to the disfiguring of the urban landscape and the territory around the main urban centers. In this paper we intend to frame the urban project and, in particular, the project of public space in this transformation dynamics, and understand how the recent interventions in public space tackle the current Portuguese urban reality, in order to provide consistency, structure and readability to the less consolidated and fragmented urban sectors. Finally we seek to assess the role of public space in a possible and desirable process of redesigning the Portuguese city, suggesting hypotheses to “think the project of public space”.

Keywords : Portuguese Contemporary city; urban design; public space; urban recomposition.
