Abstract

SANTOS, Gleici  and  NUCCI, João. Vegetal Cover Index and Green View Index: indicators of urban environmental quality. GOT [online]. 2019, n.17, pp.229-245. ISSN 2182-1267.  https://doi.org/10.17127/got/2019.17.010.

Studies of environmental quality are fundamental for the understanding of the environmental dynamics of cities, and vegetation is one of the main indicators of quality. Nevertheless, in many studies urban vegetation is often considered regarding its horizontal perspective, i.e., with the spatialization of vegetal cover captured by means of remote sensors, while the vertical structure of vegetation is often overlooked. This research aims to present and discuss this condition, investigating the need for analysis of vertical vegetation (that viewed by pedestrians) in the studies of urban environmental quality. We compared Vegetal Cover Index with Green View Index of four places and the results indicated the necessity of considering also the Green View Index to elaborate the Urban Environmental Quality Chart.
