The acquisition of skills for reading comprehension is increasingly presented as the way to knowledge. Expository texts stand out as preferred means of access to knowledge. As such, it is important that the texts that students have access to daily in the classroom (eg, textbooks) are suitable for development of these skills. In this study, we analyzed the textbook of Environmental Studies for the 4th year that was more used in Portugal in the academic year 2010/2011. Specifically, we ascertained the percentage of expository texts, we analyzed their structure (Meyer, 1985), the type of issues that accompany them, as well as the relation between questions and answers (Raphael, 1986 cit. in Giasson, 2000). The textbook was also analyzed in the light of what is recommended by the official documents of the Ministry of Education.
