Abstract

CARDOSO-MARTINS, Cláudia  and  GONCALVES, Daniela Teixeira. "Funil" or "Funiu"?: an exploratory study about the development of children’s knowledge of morphophonic orthographic patterns in Brazilian. Invest. Práticas [online]. 2017, vol.7, n.3, pp.41-60. ISSN 2182-1372.

This study examined the development of children’s knowledge of morphophonic orthographic patterns in Brazilian Portuguese. Second to fifth grade children were asked to spell two groups of words with inconsistent phoneme/grapheme correspondences: words in which the correspondences are determined by morphophonic patterns (e.g., /iw/ at the end of oxytone words is represented by IU if the word is a verb, but by IL if the word is a noun), and words with correspondences that are not constrained by morphophonic nor grafophonic patterns (e.g., /ʃ / can be represented by either X or CH). Only the fourth and fifth grade children showed a clear difference favoring the words from the first group over those from the second, suggesting that the development of children’s knowledge of morphophonic patterns is a protracted process in Brazilian Portuguese.

Keywords : Orthographic knowledge development; morphophonic regularities; spelling; Brazilian Portuguese.
