Resumen

MELAO, Dulce. Children’s literature and lifelong reading: paths of prospective teachers’ initial training. Invest. Práticas [online]. 2019, vol.9, n.1, pp.56-68. ISSN 2182-1372.  https://doi.org/10.25757/invep.v9i1.175.

Today lifelong reading has become one of the main priorities in the educational arena, in Portugal, gaining prominence in society, namely concerning the training of prospective teachers. During such training, this aim is also understood as a major commitment, given the role played by prospective teachers in nurturing future reading practices. The theoretical framework of this paper draws on the potential of picturebooks for the development of such practices, thus aiming: i) to investigate the relevance prospective teachers attach to picturebooks concerning the development and planning of reading motivation activities; ii) to reflect on the role they believe picturebooks play to nurture literary reading practices that contribute to foster lifelong reading. The participants of our study were 3rd year students completing a 1st degree in Education in a Portuguese higher education institution, enrolled in the curricular unit of Initiation to reading and writing. The reflections carried out by these students, in the form of work in pairs, were used as research instruments. Due to the objectives outlined, a qualitative approach was carried out, within a case study framework. We conclude that these students consider picturebooks very relevant to motivate readers, emphasizing the role of peritexts and the importance of the topics addressed in picturebooks as an added value to reading engagement.
