Abstract
BRUNHEIRA, Lina. Spatial reasoning and algebraic thinking: the establishment of connections in initial teacher training. Invest. Práticas [online]. 2020, vol.10, n.2, pp.69-89. ISSN 2182-1372. https://doi.org/10.25757/invep.v10i2.208.
This article reports a research in the context of a K-6 prospective teacher education program. The objective is to identify the potential of a counting problem in relation to the development of spatial reasoning and algebraic thinking. The data was collected from the records of a class. The analysis focused on the spatial reasoning processes and the type of representations used to express algebraic ideas, their understanding and the mobilization of functional thinking. The study suggests that this type of task is a relevant proposal, as it leads to generalization, favours connections between spatial reasoning and algebraic thinking. The use of these tasks according to an exploratory approach, favours the emergence of different approaches, which meet the experiences and knowledge of the trainees. The collective discussion has the potential to promote the confrontation of different representations, values their understanding and favours progression to more formal levels.
