Abstract

PIRES, Manuel Duarte João. The profile of Portuguese lecturers of Portuguese as a Foreign Language in mainland China. Invest. Práticas [online]. 2022, vol.12, n.1, pp.79-96.  Epub Mar 29, 2022. ISSN 2182-1372.  https://doi.org/10.25757/invep.v12i1.314.

Portuguese as a Foreign Language (PFL) teaching has flourished in Chinese territory due to the deepening of socio-economic and diplomatic relations with Portuguese-speaking countries. Learning Portuguese has been synonymous with competitiveness and employability for students learning Portuguese in more than fifty higher education institutions across China. Due to the rapid growth of the teaching of Portuguese and the territorial extension, there are particularities of PFL in China that still lack a detailed and descriptive analysis. In this context, this article aims to understand the profile of Portuguese teachers in mainland China. Based on questionnaires to lecturers, the main findings of this study reveal aspects such as the quantitative dimension, academic, and professional training, geographical distribution, or the current employment situation of these lecturers, affected, in many cases, by the effects of the pandemic.

Keywords : Portuguese as a foreign language; Mainland China; higher education; Portuguese lecturers.
