Resumen

The article describes and analyses an authentic literacy practice performed with 6th grading students in a Portuguese urban school, with a democratically participatory civic commitment purpose. The activity, resulting from a decision taken by the students, consisted in the writing of a letter, addressed to citizens of Ukraine, following the procedures of the writing cycle, accompanied by a drawing. The letter aimed to monitor the first-needs goods given to citizens of Ukraine in the context of war and share a positive message. The drawing functioned as a reinforcement and aimed to ensure the reception and understanding of the written message.

The products achieved made it possible for students to understand the relevance of literacy as a transformative practice and, at the same time, to develop social skills and democratic participation.
