Abstract

ALDEIA, João. The relocation of homeless people in the public space. CIDADES [online]. 2013, n.27, pp.61-72. ISSN 2182-3030.  https://doi.org/10.7749/citiescommunitiesterritories.dec2013.027.ess01.

In the last decades, the economic orientation of public space has been accentuated and it has become less hospitable for homeless people, leading to a decrease of their survival possibilities. The traditional tension between hospitality and inhospitality strategies of dealing with the visible poor is being reconfigured in contemporary Western societies, creating a form of hospitality which is based on the active rejection of interaction with disqualified-because-poor-otherness. This kind of mixophobic hospitality has the effect of reducing of the number and kinds of places where homeless people are welcomed. Unwelcomed in these public spaces, they are relocated to homelessness services and other heterotopic places to which the middle classes and elites have no interest in going to, indicating a tendency of spatial differentiation between "our places" and "their places".

Keywords : Heterotopy; Homelessness; Mixophobic Hospitality; Public Space.
