Many cities are rich in rivers, canals and estuaries that shape and embellish their urban landscapes. Traditionally used as transport routes and leisure spaces, they have undergone periods of degradation with intense domestic and industrial pollution. In the last decades, such spaces have been thought as alternatives to the dystopic context of contemporary cities, challenging the hegemonic model of private individual mobility and bringing social, cultural and environmental benefits. Recife, known as Brazilian Venice for the number of rivers that cross the city, started investing, as of 2012, in a pilot project that seeks to clean up the waters of its rivers and transform them into corridors for public transportation. The Rios da Gente project appears as a potential mobility that can democratize and pluralize the options of modes of transport in the region. This article aims to analyze this navigability project as a form of potential mobility following the concept of motility presented by Kaufmann (2002) and starting from the model of potential mobility developed by Kellerman (2012). This model and basic concepts are useful for a reflection at both micro and macro levels, for example, on sustainable urban mobility planning and management. Starting from the concepts that constitute a potential mobility and its appropriation, we focus on aspects of the individuals / users, but, mainly, the societal considerations of these elements.
